A portion of the proceeds from each festival is placed in a scholarship fund to aid young musicians of Central Appalachia in continuing their musical education. The first scholarships were awarded in 1998 and since then more than $500,000 has been awarded. Scholarships are given to individual students and to organized groups providing musical education to young people.
